Boys room makeover
DIY | June 2020
Hi, I’m Gianna
Today, I want to share the transformation process of my son’s room. But before we dive in, let’s take a look at the ‘before’ pictures!
At first, the nursery room wasn’t bad, but as my son turned three, I started thinking about giving it a makeover. He was absolutely obsessed with sharks at the time, so I decided to go with a blue theme for the project.
Wow, there are so many shades of blue! I found color chips that I liked, but often when I applied them to the entire wall, they didn’t give me the exact look I was going for. So this time, I decided to stick color chips in my son’s room and observed them for several days. I noticed that the colors changed quite a bit depending on the time of day with the sunlight.
That’s why I chose these two colors below. Why two? Because I planned half painted wall.
First, I sent my child and my husband to my in-laws’ house to begin the work. However, at the time, I had recently started with self-painting, and I made one significant mistake—I didn’t apply primer. Currently, my son’s room is mint-colored, and I thought blue could cover it since the paint stated it had primer in it. However, due to not applying primer, I had to paint it three times before the original mint color could be covered.
I made a promise to myself at that moment: I will always apply primer! This is just another lesson learned.
First, you’ll want to apply masking tape to the outer edges of the walls. This is the process of protecting areas where paint should not get when using a brush or roller. Additionally, laying down cloth or paper below can help prevent paint from splattering on the floor.
Now that we’ve completed all the previous steps, it’s time to start painting. I’m using two different colors for a half-wall painting effect, so I roughly mark the positions and start by applying the white base color to about half of the wall.
And then, after measuring the exact length, I tape off the boundary and proceed to paint the remaining lower half with the blue color. This completes the half-wall effect.
After!
I faced some trial and error with three coats of paint, but my son’s room has been completely transformed, especially my son loves it so much!
