Ikea Rast Hack
DIY | August 2021
Hi, I’m Gianna.
My husband had an old storage cabinet he used even before we got married. It’s an Ikea Rast, made of wood. I thought it would be great to refurbish it. Coincidentally, we needed a storage cabinet for our son’s room. The bottom picture shows the original appearance of the Ikea Rast. It’s not bad, but I wanted to transform it into a dresser similar to the one on the right(from wayfair), so I started the refurbishment process.
First, I removed all the handles and filled the holes with wood filler. After that, I smoothed the surface with sandpaper. Then it was time for painting. I wanted a white base with gold handle accents, so I applied Behr: Ultra Pure White. Actually, I had this paint leftover from a previous project for peeling molding, so I used it.
I applied a total of 2 coats of paint, and when it comes to painting cabinets or storage units, I prefer using foam rollers. This is because foam rollers leave minimal brush marks and create a smooth surface that can almost replace spray paint.
After painting and letting it dry, here comes the highlight of the revamp – attaching the handles. I purchased pull ring handles. I drilled small holes using a drill and then secured them in place with screws.
Ta-da! See how it transformed!
An old dresser can be transformed into a new piece of furniture just by changing the paint and handles. It’s a simple project that you can finish in just a day. Do you have any old and tired furniture at home? If so, why not try refurbishing it like this? Well, I’ll be back next time. Goodbye!
